Osun: Adeleke Backs Ijesha Development, Owa Obokun Cracks Down on Political Violence

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has described the Ijesha people as an enterprising and accomplished group, as he lauded the unveiling of the Ijesha Hall of Fame as a landmark initiative aimed at celebrating excellence and heritage.

The governor made the remarks at the event hosted by the Owa Obokun of Ijeshaland, Oba Adesuyi Haastrup, noting that the project reflects visionary leadership and a modern approach to traditional governance.

Governor Adeleke, who attended alongside members of the State Executive Council, said the initiative underscores the monarch’s capacity to drive socio-economic growth in Ijeshaland and Osun State at large.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the development of Ijeshaland, highlighting ongoing infrastructural projects and the transformation of Ilesa into a university town through the establishment of the University of Ilesa.

According to the governor, the institution has achieved significant milestones, including the accreditation of 95 academic courses and ongoing reconstruction of internal infrastructure. He added that the Palace–Brewery Junction dual carriageway project would soon be commissioned to further boost connectivity and economic activities in the area.

Adeleke also called on Ijesa indigenes at home and in the diaspora to fulfill their pledges toward the growth of the university, stressing the need for sustained support in expanding its infrastructure and academic capacity.

Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with Ijeshaland, the governor paid tribute to the late Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, while describing Oba Haastrup as a torchbearer of innovation and modernity in traditional leadership.

“We have a strong development partner in the palace of the Owa Obokun. I am building on the opportunities provided by this forward-looking royal father,” Adeleke said.

In his address, Oba Haastrup expressed deep concern over rising cases of political violence in Ijeshaland, warning that the palace would no longer tolerate acts of thuggery and bloodshed.

The monarch cautioned political actors ahead of upcoming elections to maintain peace, revealing that strict traditional and legal sanctions await perpetrators.

He warned that individuals found culpable, along with their sponsors, could face severe consequences, including banishment and social ostracisation from Ijeshaland.

“We will apply the law and tradition to punish sponsors of political violence. Enough is enough,” the royal father declared.
