Gov Makinde Signs Executive Order to Curb Insecurity in Oyo

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has signed Executive Order No. 002 of 2026, introducing new measures aimed at strengthening security, enforcing vehicle registration regulations, and improving traffic management across the state.

The governor signed the order on Friday, unveiling fresh restrictions on the operations of commercial motorcycle riders, popularly known as okada operators, as part of efforts to tackle growing security concerns in the state.

The development comes amid heightened anxiety over insecurity in some parts of Oyo, particularly following the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, an incident that has continued to attract public concern more than 20 days after it occurred.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Makinde announced that commercial motorcycle operators would no longer be permitted to operate between 10:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. anywhere within the state. He explained that the restriction was designed to curb criminal activities often carried out under the cover of darkness.

According to the governor, intelligence reports and security investigations have revealed that unregistered vehicles, motorcycles, and tricycles are increasingly being used by criminal elements to perpetrate crimes and evade arrest. He said the new order would help security agencies identify offenders and improve surveillance efforts.

Makinde stated that the executive order provides a stronger legal framework for enforcing existing vehicle registration and traffic regulations. He noted that relevant authorities would now be empowered to arrest offenders, impound vehicles, and prosecute individuals who violate the law.

The governor stressed that proper vehicle registration remains a critical tool for maintaining law and order, as it enables security agencies to identify vehicle owners and monitor suspicious movements. He added that recent security breaches, particularly the abduction incident in Oriire, influenced the government’s decision to introduce additional security measures.

While assuring residents that the protection of lives and property remains a top priority of his administration, Makinde urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through the state’s toll-free emergency line, 615. He also commended security agencies and the Amotekun Corps for their commitment to safeguarding communities, pledging continued support to ensure Oyo State remains safe and secure.
