The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has cautioned the federal government against the establishment of new universities.
The association’s National President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, said this in Benin at the weekend during the 2nd regular zonal executive council meeting of the South-South zone of the union.
He explained that the funds being budgeted for the new one should be used to strengthen existing universities for effective service delivery.
According to him, the federal government had only honoured 10 per cent of its agreements with the union.
“The present universities are not fully catered for. Members of staff are not paid correctly; yet we see the establishment of universities day in, day out.”
He described the Integrated Personnel and Pay System (IPPS) by the federal government as satanic, lamenting that under the scheme, the Vice-Chancellor of a university could not employ a single staff.
In her speech, the Vice-Chancellor of UNIBEN, Prof. Lillian Salami, urged university workers to move beyond personal gains and be committed to the sustenance of the university.
