A former Commissioner for Information, Social Development, Youth, Sports, and Culture in Osun State, Late Alhaji Muibi Garba Adewoye, has been honoured with posthumous award by the Apomu Descendant Union.

Adewoye, who was the Basorun of Apomu kingdom, was awarded by the indigenous union for his “monumental contribution to the development of Apomu” in his lifetime.

The diamond award recipient, Adewoye died on March 13, 2004.

Receiving the award, the Adewoye family commended the Alapomu of Apomu, Oba Koyade Afolabi and the ADU for acknowledging and appreciating their father’s contributions to his hometown.

According to the Adewoyes who were represented Mr. Abayomi Fakeye, the award goes a long way in encouraging them to continue the good legacy left behind by their father, noting that their commitment to the development of Apomu is unwavering.

They thanked Oba Afolabi and the ADU for refreshing and appreciating the good memories of their father.

The ADU President, Engr. Abbas Soliu, who presented the award, explained that the late Muibi Adewoye won the Diamond Award in an online voting system.

According to Soliu, the good deeds of the awardee continue to speak for him after his death, urging indigenes and residents of Apomu to live a good life and contribute to the development of their hometown and humanity at large.

Alhaji Muibi Garba Adewoye also known as Morroco was born on April 4, 1944 to the family of Aremu Garuba, Jago Compound Apomu. He earned his name “Adewoye” in honour of the late Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Adenle, who ascended the throne on the very day of his birth.

Adewoye received his basic education at Odo-Otin Grammar School, Fatima College Ikire, and the University of Jos (for his tertiary education). Adewoye served in the Nigerian Military in Yola, Maiduguri and Jos, Plateau State. He was also a teacher of Physical and Health Education at Laro Grammar School, Osogbo.

He later transitioned into politics, becoming the flagbearer of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) for the State House of Assembly in 1983 (old Irewole State Constituency).

Subsequently, Adewoye joined Social Democratic Party (SDP) and spearheaded the governorship campaign of Late Alhaji Isiaka Adeleke, the first executive Governor of Osun State.

Adewoye was appointed Commissioner for Information, Social Development, Youth, Sports, and Culture.

In recognition of his dedication to his town and the people, Adewoye was bestowed with the chieftaincy title of Bashorun of Apomu Kingdom by the late Alapomu of Apomu.

He is happily married to Late Alhaja Adewoye, and survived by children and grandchildren.
