Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has described the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government, as a waste.

Mr Buhari, who is on his second term in office, is now spending over seven years in government with Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the ruling party, planning to succeed him in 2023.

Mr Abubakar, who spoke in Akure, Ondo State capital, to kick start his presidential campaign in the South-West, added that the 16 years spent by the PDP in government cannot be compared with that of Mr Buhari’s ruling political party.

“You can’t compare what the PDP has done in 16 years with what the APC has done in eight years, they have done nothing,” the PDP presidential candidate slammed Mr Buhari-led APC government during his campaign on Wednesday in Akure.

Since his emergence in 2015, Mr Buhari’s government has faced criticism following his failure to deliver on its electoral promises.

The former military head of state had often promised to fight corruption with zero tolerance during his campaign tour, earning support from Nigerians who would rally him with massive votes.

The president’s failure has also fueled Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and further undermines democratic promises while the situation has made the country’s citizens repeatedly kick against the APC-led government.

But speaking further, Mr Abubakar decried the high rate of unemployment and poverty which he noted confirmed the failure of the Buhari-led government.

He noted that the PDP would emerge victorious in 2023 to end the issue of insecurity bedevilling the country.

“We (PDP) would definitely eliminate insecurity,” the PDP presidential candidate added.

The PDP presidential candidate stressed that the opposition party recorded the highest votes in Ondo in the last general election, noting that the party would replicate the same.

“We have started our campaign rally from Ondo state in the South-West. It is deliberate to show you what you have done to us in the last election in 2019 because we appreciate it.

“If you give us again, we will end insecurity, we will make all the federal roads leading to your (Ondo) state to other parts of the country be very honourable,” Mr Abubakar said.

If elected, the PDP candidate assured that his administration has earmarked the sum of $10 billion for youth empowerment in his policy document.

“We would set aside enough money to take care of our youths. We would set aside $10 billion as fund to empower our young women and men. It’s going to be our top priority. We also provide enough funds for our education.”

Earlier, the embattled PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, told Nigerians not to be discouraged by the misgovernance of the ruling APC, noting that the opposition party is coming to correct the wrongs.

He also pleaded with the people of Ondo to give Mr Abubakar and PDP the highest votes in the 2023 general election.

“Let nobody come and deceive you that he is more Yoruba than Atiku. Unfortunately, the country is in bad shape, with poor roads, unemployment and insecurity among others.

“Atiku is coming back as the next president to do what he did in the past. He is going to unify the country,” Mr Ayu said.
