Army to Recruit 24,000 Soldiers to Strengthen National Security

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shuaibu, has announced that the Nigerian Army is set to recruit and train 24,000 new soldiers as part of efforts to boost its operational capacity and respond more effectively to security challenges across the country.

Shuaibu disclosed the plan on Wednesday during an operational visit to the 1 Division of the Nigerian Army in Kaduna. He said the recruitment drive forms a key component of the army’s strategy to confront evolving threats and improve troop readiness nationwide.

He explained that the army intends to train 12,000 soldiers within six months through three newly approved training centres, with the potential to double the figure to 24,000 if the facilities operate two streams simultaneously.

“The area of responsibility is vast, and security challenges are dynamic. To meet these threats effectively, we need boots on the ground,” the COAS said.

According to him, the new training facilities — approved by President Bola Tinubu — will equip recruits with modern warfare skills, tactical operations knowledge, and weapon-handling expertise to ensure they are fully prepared for deployment upon completion of their training.

Shuaibu noted that the recruitment initiative will significantly enhance manpower levels, enabling wider territorial coverage, faster response to threats, and improved protection of citizens and critical infrastructure.

He emphasised that the exercise focuses not just on increasing troop numbers but also on maintaining professional standards, adding that recruits will receive training in basic tactics, combat skills, and leadership.

“This is a desperate time for our nation. The soldiers we train must be ready to tackle the multifaceted security challenges we face,” he said. “We are committed to ensuring they are properly equipped, trained, and led.”
