OAU SSANU, NASU Stage Protest To Join Nationwide Strike

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife branches of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU)and Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions (NASU)staged a peaceful protest to joined their colleagues on nationwide indefinite strike.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the union staged their peaceful protest at freedom Park, on Monday, in Ile-Ife .

They displaying their placards with inscriptions”Renegotiation of 2009 agreement; Payment of our N50 billion earned allowance; payment of our areas, 25%/35%; improve funding for higher institutions, respect,dignity, recognition and fair treatment among others.

Mr Ademola Junaid, the Chairman, SSANU), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), branch, said that the strike based on failure of Federal Government to conclude and implement the 2009 agreement.

“The 2009 agreement we are talking about is legit thing that government agreed to review the document in five years time.

“We are surprised that government are doing divide and rules tactics now, given academics attention, forgotten that they were playing their own role and likewise we”. He stated.

The Chairman commended President Bola Tinubu, for performing excellently well in educational sector as well as given intervention like loans to workers to ease their welfare without reduction for a year.

He expressed further that Federal Government need to meet their demands by paying all their demands ahead payment of their loans.

Junaid appealed to well meaning Nigerians to speak with Mr.President to use his office to talk to Minister of Education, Executive Secretary of NUC to do the needful.

Also, Mr Dayo Oyediwura, the Chairman, Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions (NASU), OAU Chapter, explained that that Federal Government have answered one Union while forsaken others.

“Federal Government have completed agreement and signed into implementation of a union in 2025, so between January and February, our own agreement would have signed into implementation too, which was not done.

“We were surprised seen a circular by April ending that Federal Government have awarded a 30% salary increment for staff of Universities, Polytechnic and Colleges of Education, which they said was an error”. He stated.

Oyediwura urged Federal Government to be fear and let Justice must prevails, condemned granted 40% increase to one Union at the detriment of others in the same institution.

The NASU Chairman enjoined Federal Government to allow equity to be done for all and sundry, for they have given them enough time, from Dec.2025 to May.
