Many indigenes of Ogbaru community in Anambra State lost their lives to a boat mishap on Friday.
Sources told DAILY POST that the tragedy happened at Umunnankwo community, with about 85 persons aboard the ship, when it was sailing from Onukwu Bridge to Nkwo market, Ogbakuba before it capsized.
Former member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, and current candidate of the Labour Party for same position, Hon Victor Afam Ogene confirmed the incident.
He said: “So far, unofficial reports indicate that between 20-30 persons are yet to be accounted for.”
Ogene, who quoted Hon. Pascal Aniegbuna, the Transition Committee Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, said: “While some of the passengers were rescued, several others, unfortunately lost their lives.”
There has been heavy flood in the area, with some people reported to have lost their lives.
Ogene said: “This sad news of this terrible accident is numbing and painful to me as a person and must be very devastating, especially to the immediate families of the victims. This is a collective loss for Ogbaru as a whole and we are united in sorrow.
“My condolences go to the affected families and also Ogbahu people and communities, who have in recent times found themselves in the jaws of severe flood disaster that has practically submerged all our communities and displaced thousands of people.
